Wat Hut

We got a commission to do an extension of a private house outside Stockholm for a Swedish-Thai couple. The woman has two children back in Thailand that now is going to move in to the house.
The site is very idyllic and Swedish and the house is situated on a southern slope to a beautiful and calm lake. Moving to a completely different country can be difficult, especially if you are a kid, so we wanted to give the Thai-kids some playful elements to easier adjust to their new country.



The new house follows the form and scale of the old building but has a more modern expression with a white and shining corrugated steel façade that slightly reflects the surroundings.
Different functions interlink in this extension to include all family members but the focus is onthe children.



The new building consists of two rooms for the children with views towards the lake and a family room between the rooms with an undulated fake grass floor that offers a relaxed atmosphere.
The room can be completely opened at summertime, so the children rooms will feel like two small cottages and the family room will extend to the nature around it.
The Swedish man likes golf so the grass will be an ideal spot for a driving range.





A cliff next to the house on the northern side is painted in gold as a symbol of Thailand and a place where the mother can have her shrine where she occasionally can pray.
The gold is lit up at nighttime and will be highly present in the family room while playing Nintendo.
The proposal is still under evaluation; we will give you more information about the outcome later on.

Esther Williams pool - A Florida shaped pool for a moviestar

Florida's first theme park, Cypress Gardens, was the brainchild of Richard Downing "Dick" Pope Sr. With his wife, Julie Downing Pope, he transformed a marshy, lakeside property in Winter Haven into a magnificent garden. The park's first visitors in 1936 toured pathways surrounded by lush plants from around the world. Two years later, electric boats meandered through the park's winding, hand-dug canals. Water ski shows commenced in 1942, and the park became the "Water Ski Capital of the World." The Florida-shaped Esther WilliamsSwimming Pool still graces the shore of Lake Eloise. The park was a set for dozens of short feature films, a stage for beauty pageants, and a site for special television broadcasts.The Esther Williams Swimming Pool was built in the shape of the map of Florida, projecting out in Lake Eloise as a set for MGM technicolor movie filmed at Cypress Gardens.

Cueva de los Cristales - The Sistine Chapel of crystals

VD says: Outstanding natural wonder that once again proves that Earth still is the best architect so far

Buried 300 meters below Naica mountain in the Chihuahuan Desert, this astonishing cave was
discovered by two miners in 2000.
Mexico's Cueva de los Cristales (Cave of Crystals) contains some of the world's largest known natural crystals - translucent beams of gypsum as long as 11 meters.
The cave reminds of Superman’s Fortress of Solitude.
New studies report that for thousands of years the crystals thrived in the cave's extremely rare and stable natural environment.
Temperatures hovered consistently around a steamy 55 degrees Celsius, and the cave was
filled with mineral-rich water that drove the crystals' growth.
The Cave of Crystals is a horseshoe-shaped cavity in limestone rock about 10 meters wide and 30 meters long.
The volcanic activity that began about 26 million years ago created Naica mountain and filled it with high-temperature anhydrite.
When magma underneath the mountain cooled and the temperature dropped, the anhydrite began to dissolve. The anhydrite slowly enriched the waters with sulfate and calcium molecules, which for millions of years have been deposited in the caves in the form of huge selenite gypsum crystals.
The humidity is 100% inside the cave which in combination with the extreme heat, you cannot visit this wonder without a heat resistant suit. That is also cool.

Place Djemma El Fna - A mythical square in Morocco

VD says: Magicians, storytellers, monkeys and snakes, how can you not love this place.

Djemma el Fna, the "Meeting Place of the Dead", a suitably chilling phrase which conjures an aura of exoticism and savage justice to an otherwise fully functional public square, has continued unabated for centuries. By day it serves as a venue where magicians, fortune tellers, herbalists, acrobats, monkey handlers, snake charmers, dentists, astrologers, numerologists, and sorcerers create intriguing displays of bewitching spectacle. By night, the square transforms into a symphony of mystical brotherhoods and night musicians: the Aissoua, Derkaoua, Hamadasha, Jilila, and Gnaoua. Free from the restrictions and expectations of light entertainment for a tourist crowd, this "Rendezvous of the Dead" is where the performances animate the audience and musicians alike into an elevated spiritual congress colliding in sonorous ecstacy.

Mickey's Trailer - A great show-off gadget

VD says: One of the best Disney inventions

Mickey's Trailer is a animated short film by Walt Disney productions. It stars Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy on a trailer vacation. The trip is an architectural showoff of custom made details. The most genius gadget would be the fan construction that can be unrolled for nicer scenery. The picture has also become a classic cartoon on Swedish Christmas television for several years, teaching the Swedish youth how to be inventive. The results may vary.

Däckshus - A Swedish modernistic classic
Birth: 1960
Location: Smörgatan 23 Kallebäck, Gothenburg
Architect: Erik Friberger
VD says: Probably the building with strongest modernistic concept ever erected in Sweden.

Many architects has thought about 3d stacked villas with gardens but this is the only realized project we know about. The “Däckshus” by the Swedish subversive modernist hero Erik Friberger is a three story concrete construction where villas are placed later on. The distance between the decks is 4 meters and the plots varies from 144 m2 to 210 m2 and all installation is put in the circulation space. The idea was that the villas would expand with a growing family. Most of the houses was however already fully built from the beginning.

Crazy Horse Mountain - An epic mountain transformation

VD says: You have to admire the dedication of these people, the result will be overwhelming in scale if they ever complete the project.

The Crazy Horse Memorial is a mountain monument under construction in the Black Hills of South Dakota, in the form of Crazy Horse, an Oglala Lakota warrior, riding a horse and pointing into the distance.
The memorial consists of the mountain carving (monument), the Indian Museum of North America, and the Native American Cultural center. The monument is being carved out of Thunderhead Mountain on land considered sacred by some Native Americans, between Custer and Hill City, roughly 10 km away from Mount Rushmore.
The sculpture's final dimensions are planned to be 195 m wide and 172 m high. The head of Crazy Horse will be 27 m high; by comparison, the heads of the four U.S. Presidents at Mount Rushmore are each 18 m high.
The monument has been in progress since 1948 and is still far from completion. If finished, it will be the world's largest sculpture.

Barbershop Mall - A mall with a Guggenheim ramp with just barbershops in it

VD says: Next time you should have a haircut, go to this mall.

This mirror clad mall with a Guggenheim-like ramp has only barbershops in it, we counted them to around 80, the cheaper ones are higher up. What also enhances this insane mall is the tacky Darth Vader character that walks around, making it a South American Star Wars feeling over the whole place. A must see.

Matterhorn - The peak of peaks

VD says: Mont Blanc in all its glory, we still think that Matterhorn is the proudest peak of the Alps, the worlds most refined area. It could have been a little higher though.

Although not the highest mountain in the Alps, the Matterhorn is considered as an iconic emblem of the region of the Swiss Alps.
The Matterhorn acquired its characteristic pyramidal shape by natural erosion over the past million years. At the beginning of alpine orogeny, the Matterhorn was only a rounded mountain like a hill. Because its height is above the snowline, its flanks are covered by ice, resulting from the accumulation and compaction of snow. During the warmer period of summer, part of the ice melts and seeps into the bedrock. When it freezes again, it fractures pieces of rock because of its dilatation (Freeze Thaw), forming a cirque. Four cirques led to the actual shape of the mountain.

Xanadu - A movie mansion classic

"Here, on the deserts of the Gulf coast, a private mountain was commissioned and successfully built. One hundred thousand trees, twenty thousand tons of marble are the ingredients of Xanadu's mountain. Contents of Xanadu's palace: paintings, pictures, statues, the very stones of many another palace - a collection of everything so big it can never be catalogued or appraised; enough for ten museums; the loot of the world. Xanadu's livestock: the fowl of the air, the fish of the sea, the beast of the field and jungle. Two of each; the biggest private zoo since Noah. Like the Pharaohs, Xanadu's landlord leaves many stones to mark his grave. Since the Pyramids, Xanadu is the costliest monument a man has built to himself."

Cave School - A school inside of a cave

Built in 1984, this school sits in one of three caves inside a mountain.
Nowadays, it accomodates 186 students with a teaching force of 8 staff.
Eerie but cool, we think the kids like their school setting too.

Honghe Hani Terrace - One of the largest alteration of the landscape ever made
Birth: Thousands of years ago
Location: Yunnan Province, China
Architect: The Hani people
VD says: Agriculture that also becomes an artform

On the banks of Honghe River in South China's Yunnan Province are millions of acres of agricultural and ecological wonders - otherwise known as the Honghe Hani Terrace. Making full use of the special geological and climactic conditions in the area, the Hani people have found a perfect combination between human civilization and the environment. In terms of size and coverage, the Hani Terrace is largest in the world.
The Hani People, creators of this wonder, originated from the Tibetan Plateau on the upper reaches of the Yellow River. After centuries of migration, a group of the ancient Qiang people settled down in the Ailao Mountains in Southern Yunnan, and became today's Hani race. About 600,000 Hani people still dwell in the region and their ancestors totally altered the landforms there to grow crops to feed themselves, yet the ecology was not damaged. In fact, they have made the place even more attractive, presenting a perfect testimony to harmony between man and nature. The terrace shows that human intervention doesn't necessarily mean destroying nature.

Viken - A landscape lit up as a painting

VD says: The most conceptual and beautiful landscape project made so far in Northern Europe.

The focus of interest is a solitary tree in a marshland at the lakeside.
At first the designers defined the viewpoint of the scene, the idea was to make a scenery like a painting. They used a layer technique to create a picture and worked with nature's own layers to achieve the typical layout of a landscape painting. The basic setup was defined as:
-a diffuse background
-the tree as the focus in the painting
-a foreground giving the scene a defined frame

Bora Bora - "The" tropical island

VD says: The perfect honeymoon island

The island is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. In the center of the island are the remnants of an extinct volcano rising to two peaks.
Thirty years ago, Hotel Bora Bora built the first over-the-water bungalows on stilts over the lagoon and today, overwater bungalows are a standard feature of most Bora Bora resorts. The quality of those bungalows ranges from comparably cheap, basic accommodations to very luxurious - and pricey - places to stay.

Noah's Ark - Immense vessel for animals designed by god

VD says: Being an animal loving office, we like this project because it shows great respect to our fellow friends. The design is a little bit too crude though, you could have expected more from the god allmighty.

The Genesis narrative tells how God, grieved by the wickedness of mankind, decided to destroy the corrupted world. However, "Noah found grace in the eyes of the lord", so God instructs Noah to build the Ark and take on board his family and representatives of the animals and birds. The flood rises to cover the Earth, but at its height "God remembered Noah", the waters abate, and dry land appears. God promises never to do it again, displaying a rainbow as a guarantee.
Great project.

Swiss bunkers - Camouflaged buildings

VD says: Buildings that tries to look like something else is always fascinating

Who would have thought that peaceful Switzerland could have produced camouflaged architecture during the cold war: fake upper-middle-class houses, fake farmhouses, fake rocks, etc.
Fake buildings are in general always cool in one way or another and that some fake trees actually are a highly sophisticated missile detector are of course supercool.

Tide Tank

Visiondivision has proposed a swimming centre that can regulate the water level from a low tide situation to a high tide giant pool, to take the swimming experience to another level.

The pool area - low tide
The pools face their shallow part towards the dressing rooms to have a safe area when one enters.
The walls in the pool area are made of stainless and brushed steel plates and slightly reflect the water and the bathing people, and become a subtle visual expansion of the room.
Each window has a adjustable shutter which can regulate the light and the views in the pool area. This makes the room constantly changeable and adjusts itself according to the rhythm of the day and the different seasons.


Low tide plan (1st floor)

Two gold colored cliffs rises from the water and divides the more busy adventure area from the calmer main pool. These cliffs has also more functional aspects; the larger one is
hollow and contains two water slides, and it is also the
entrance to the adventure area. Its surface makes it also
possible to climb on. The smaller cliff lies in the children’s pool and has a small water slide.
A undertow channel takes the visitor from the adventure pool to an outside space with an outdoor pool and a Sauna.
The pool area has two big foldable walls to separate the pools even more when this is necessary.

New possibilities open up when the folding walls are fully retracted.
The windows can be completely shut with the shutters and the water level can be raised by closing the lower vents, to get an enormous pool where one can roam free.
The ambiance of the pool can be controlled from small
passages among the large steel beams; projections of dense jungle, alp backdrops or maybe sweeping whales while you bath.


High tide plan (2nd floor)

The shutters that contain insulation will also save a lot of energy that would have been lost through the windows.
With such a flexible and big room you can easily add new layers of uses that makes the bathing experience even more exciting; theatre with a water theme, bath & cinema, water night club, and opera for example.
The dry part can be used for spectator stands as well as from the exercise rooms on the second floor, and the foyer then becomes a lounge for the event.
The new swimming centre becomes a house of culture with water.

Ponte City- The tallest residential skyscraper in Africa

Ponte City, originally called The Strydom Tower, is a skyscraper in the Hillbrow neighbourhood of Johannesburg, South Africa. It was built in 1975 to a height of 173 metres, making it the tallest residential skyscraper in Africa. The 54-story building is cylindrical, with an open center allowing additional light into the apartments. The center space is known as "the core" and rises above an uneven rock floor. Ponte City was an extremely desirable address for its views over all of Johannesburg and its surroundings.
During the 1990s, after the end of apartheid, many gangs moved into the building and it became extremely unsafe. Ponte City became symbolic of the crime and urban decay gripping the once cosmopolitan Hillbrow neighborhood. The core filled with debris five stories high as the owners left the building to decay. There were even proposals in the mid-1990s to turn the building into a highrise prison. The building came under new management in 1999, and this has improved security as well as the standard of repair. The sign on top of the building is the highest and largest sign in the southern hemisphere. It currently advertises the South African mobile phone company Vodacom.

Pepsi moon

VD says: Shows the possibilities of thinking big

Pepsi´s advertising is once again feautered in the vd guide. Rumors says that Pepsi co had plans to project its logo when the moon was full, taking commercial signs to a new pharaoic scale. The diameter of the moon is roughly 3,476 km, therefore the total visible area for the logo would be 9,500,000 sq km. It is hard to find information about the project since this kind of attempts gets a lot of criticism from different organisations. Pepsis interest in space is however no secret, in 1996, the cosmonauts Yuri Ivanovich Onufrienko and Yuri Vladimirovich Usachyov took video footage of a giant aluminum and nylon Pepsi can and a banner with the text, "Even in space" .Video footage of the can and banner was shot both inside and outside Mir space station but the commercial never aired because Pepsi later changed the design of the can.

Mar del plástico- An ocean made of green houses

Mar del plastico is a gigantic agricultural region in Almería province southern Spain and a workplace for thousands of illegal immigrants. The roofs of tens of thousands of closely packed plastic greenhouses forms this Sea of plastic (Mar del plástico).The glossy roofs making this place one of the most recognizable spots on the planet for passing satellites.

Antigone- Everybody should be entitled to live in a castle
Birth: 1979

VD says: Scale and greatness somtimes follow each other

Antigone is an enormous project. While some of Bofill's earlier housing, in the Paris new towns, for example, were large, nothing compares with this. This is virtually a new town. It is almost one kilometer long. It includes about 4,000 new dwellings and 20,000 sq. meters of commercial space, much new office space, the Languedoc-Roussillon regional government headquarters, various city and other government offices, many restaurants and cafes, special housing for students and artists, schools, sports facilities, and underground parking.
All of Bofill's buildings at Antigone are built of prefabricated concrete panels which are rendered as a veneer of classical detail; pediments, plinths, capitols, friezes, balustrades, casement windows, moldings and other details.

Ponte Veccio

VD says: Smart concept, Beautiful outcome

The position of the present bridge dates to the flood of 1178, which swept away the IX century bridge; during the same year many of the houses along the streets leading to the bridge burned. The present three-arched bridge was built by Taddeo Gaddi in 1345. The reconstruction was made possible by the rent from the shops opened on the bridge.
It is said that the economic concept of bankruptcy originated here: when a merchant could not pay his debts, the table on which he sold his wares (the "banco") was physically broken ("rotto") by soldiers, and this practice was called "bancorotto Not having a table anymore, the merchant was not able to sell anything.

Shwezigon Paya a.k.a. the VD temple

VD says: So good looking that we use it as our logo

Located near the modern village of Nyaung-U, Shwezigon was begun by Anawrahta (lower terraces), and completed by Kyanzittha in 1102. The zedi (stupa) is believed to enshrine one of four tooth relics of the Buddha that were brought over from Sri Lanka, and subsequently placed in four different stupas, to mark and consecrate the boundaries of Kyanzittha's royal city. The upper part of the stupa's anda (bell-shaped tower) was restored by King Bayinnaung in the 16th century. Shwezigon's shape was so well-liked that it greatly influenced the design of subsequent zedi in Burma.

The Palace of the People

The second largest building in the world (Pentagon is No. 1) has never been finished,The construction works started in 1983. The palace stands 12 storeys high with over 1000 halls and rooms and massive underground basements. There is a nuclear bunker, underground parking that could accommodate Buckingham Palace and a lobby stretching for 300 ft. The rooms are lavishly decorated in gold leaf and marble and over 4500 chandeliers (of 11,000 originally planned) hang in the Palace. This enormous building was originally known as the Casa Popularii, The House of The People, but the people instead coined it Casa Nebunului - the Madman's House."An entire quarter of the old town with 26 churches and over 7000 homes was destroyed to make room for the palace. In 1989 the dictator and his family fled the enraged crowd by helicopter from the roof of the building. It didn't help them much.

Notre-Dame du Raincy- The first good looking reinforced concrete piece

VD says: A must when visiting Paris

The Church is situated in the eastern Paris suburb Le Raincy. It was designed by the brothers Perret and built in 1922-1923, this was the first church to be built in reinforced concrete, and with no external ornamentation. the extraordinary feature with this church is the painted glass walls with concrete muntin. Many of the visitors to the church comes from Japan, as a smaller replica of Notre Dame du Raincy was built in the Tokyo suburbs.

Marina city

VD says: Modernism at its best

Marina city is a mixed-use residential/commercial building complex occupying an entire city block on State Street in Chicago. The building complex was designed in 1959 by Bertrand Goldberg and completed in 1964. When finished, the two towers were both the tallest residential buildings and the tallest reinforced concrete structures in the world. The complex was billed as a "city within a city", featuring numerous on-site facilities including a theatre, gym, swimming pool, ice rink, bowling alley, several stores and restaurants, and of course, a marina.

Loctus plague

The 1915 locust plague, which lasted from March to October 1915, was a plague of locusts that stripped areas in and around Palestine of almost all vegetation. This invasion of awesome proportions seriously compromised the already-depleted food supply of the region and sharpened the misery of all Jerusalemites. Midhat Bay, who was the official appointed to fight the plague, helped enact a law which required every male between aged 15 and 60 in cities to collect 20 kilograms of locust eggs or pay a fine of £4.40. Research at Oxford University has identified that swarming behaviour is a response to overcrowding. Increased tactile stimulation of the hind legs causes an increase in levels of serotonin. This causes the locust to change color, eat much more, and breed much more easily. The transformation of the locust to the swarming variety is induced by several contacts per minute over a four-hour period. It is estimated that the largest swarms have covered hundreds of square miles and consisted of many billions of locusts.

The Perito Moreno Glacier is a glacier located in the Los Glaciares National Park in the south west of Santa Cruz province, Argentina. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Argentine Patagonia. The 250 km2 ice formation, and 30 km in length, is one of 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field located in the Andes system shared with Chile. This icefield is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water.

The Medina of Fes el Bali, the largest of the two medinas of Fes, is believed to be the largest contiguous car-free urban area in the world. Since the streets are for pedestrians, they are small and very randomly planed; making it one of the biggest urban labyrinths in the world.

Trellick Tower

Trellick Tower is a 31-storey block of flats in North Kensington London. It was designed in the Brutalist style by architect Ernö Goldfinger, after a commission from the Greater London Council in 1966, and completed in 1972. It is a Grade II listed Building and is 98 metres tall (120 metres including the communications mast). The Architect where perhaps even more Brutal then the Trellick Tower Building. Goldfinger was a serious man and sometimes fired his assistants if they were inappropriately jocular.



A discussion about Ernő with Ursula Goldfinger's cousin on a golf course prompted Ian Flemming to name the James Bond adversary and villain Auric Goldfinger after Ernő. Goldfinger consulted his lawyers when the book was published in 1959 (which prompted Fleming to threaten to rename the character 'Goldprick') but eventually decided not to sue; Fleming's publishers agreed to pay his costs and gave him six free copies of the book.
